This article describes how to upgrade VirtualBox from version 5.x to 6 in Windows 10. Upgrading is as simple as downloading the latest version and running the installer. If you already have a previous version of VirtualBox installed it will be automatically upgraded.
Manually upgrade VirtualBox to 6.0 in Windows 10
In my case I was upgrading from Version 5.2.26 to 6.0.4.
Note: VirtualBox 6.0 discontinued support for 32-bit hosts. If your host OS is not 64-bit you should not upgrade and must continue running VirtualBox 5.2.
Download the installer by launching your favourite browser and navigating to https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Downloads:
Click the Windows hosts link to start the download. The file is around 209 MB so may take a few minutes depending on your connection.
If VirtualBox is already running, ensure you shutdown any running virtual machines and close VirtualBox before proceeding to run the installer.
Navigate to the folder containing the downloaded file and double-click to run the executable.
The installer will launch. Click Next.
If required, modify the features to be installed. You can also specify the installation location.
Note: If your existing installation is in a non-default location (i.e. not
C:\Program Files\Oracle\VirtualBox) you may need to specify it here.
Click Next to proceed.
Customise the feature options (for example I have de-selected Create a shortcut in the Quick Launch Bar) then click Next.
You will receive a warning about an interruption to network interfaces during the installation - click Yes to continue.
Finally, click Install to begin the installation/upgrade.
This may take several minutes depending on your circumstances. Also watch out for any security prompts you may need to accept for the installation to proceed.
And you’re done! Click Finish to close the installer and launch VirtualBox.
To check the VirtualBox version, select Help > About VirtualBox…
If you had installed the Oracle VM VirtualBox Extension Pack you will get a prompt that it is an old version. You can download the latest version by clicking Download in the prompt.
VirtualBox will check for the latest extension pack and prompt again. Click ** Download**.
Wait for the download to complete.
When the download is complete, click Install.
You will be prompted to confirm the upgrade. Click Upgrade.
The license terms will be displayed. Scroll to the bottmo and then click I Agree.
The install should complete fairly quickly, then you’ll get a confirmation message. Click OK.
You can also safely delete the downloaded file when prompted by clicking Delete.
Congratulations, you have now successfully upgraded VirtualBox to 6.0.
